From the Advisor’s Canoe… What defines success? Or, more specifically, what determines if we have a successful conclave? Is it attendance numbers? Fewest numbers of injuries? Good weather? Or is it something less tangible? Dr. Goodman once said: “The Order of the Arrow is a thing of the spirit”. We couldn’t agree more. What determines if we are successful is not what was done, but how it was done, and how much it benefited our members. If you got to talk to members from other lodges, ask them questions, share your thought and concerns with them, exchange ideas, then we were successful. Success is weather or not we have lived the spirit. This year’s conclave is credited to many people both in front of, and behind the scenes. The Council of Chiefs, composed of the Section Officers and Lodge Chiefs, has worked diligently to come up with some new and innovative training sessions and simplified the afternoon activities to try and bring the conclave attendees closer together. We, as the Advisors, are privileged to get to work with so many amazing leaders in the Order. We continue to believe that it is youth that can provide the best program for youth. It is weekends like this that serve to reinforce that belief. The many adults that support these youth also have been a pleasure to work with. You are the example for youth to follow, not just now, but as they become adults as well. From training sessions, registration assistance, patch designs, Day of Service assistance, Assistance Team members, to rides to events and financial oversight, and all of you who’s efforts may go unapplauded, we extend our sincerest thank you. At the Rivers Bend In the thirty-second year of our Section, we will have many challenges. For the first time in 20 years NOAC will return to the Section, this time at Michigan State University. The new OAOA (OA Ocean Adventure) is already booked solid this year, but the other national service programs face an uncertain future without increased attendance. Quality Lodge status is becoming more important in the Council recharter process. The Day of Service is being pushed even harder this year, not just for OA members, but asking to include all members of Scouting. All of these things and more require us to work together to ease the heavy burdens from the shoulders of our brothers. Have problems with member retention? How do other lodges do it? How do you maintain an up-to-date website? Ask around. The resources you need are available, if you need more, let us know. The role of the Section is to help strengthen the lodge. How can we best help you? We believe that our Section is among the best in the region. This is a direct result of our dynamic and dedicated youth and adults who truly enjoy playing and working together for the benefit of our fellow brothers in the Order. Again, we thank you for you time and effort, and look forward to your continued friendship and support while working with you, in the Great River. -Section C2B Advisors
